Statewide Soil Moisture Update
Author: Eric Hunt- High Plains Regional Climate Center
Published: Updated:
After another relatively wet week, soil moisture is still plentiful across most of the state, though most areas are not as waterlogged as a week ago. The only exception is in a narrow band in central Nebraska from Minden and north-northeast to Brunswick where conditions remain dry. McCook and Newport are also on the dry side. However, most of those locations would go into positive index territory with an inch of rain this week, which seems probable for all but perhaps the northernmost locations this week.
** The Soil Moisture Index (SMI) is based on the estimated field capacity and wilting point at three depths (10 cm, 25 cm, 50 cm) at Automated Weather Data Network (AWDN) sites under grass cover. The index may not necessarily be representative of conditions of a nearby field, particularly if differences in total precipitation over the previous week have been significant**
Climate products and tools are developed by the High Plains Regional Climate Center (HPRCC) and its partner Regional Climate Centers to provide users with a means to routinely access recent weather and climate data. While applied research has demonstrated that the use of such data in decision making can reduce risk and lower a user's cost, near-real-time data are preliminary in nature and sometimes contain errors. Although care is taken to remove known errors, it is possible that some data will change after receipt of written records and final quality control steps. Users are therefore warned to consider any negative impact that errant data might have on their business and use preliminary data and information at their own risk.
The user assumes the entire risk related to the use of information on HPRCC webpages. HPRCC provides such information "as is,", and in no event will HPRCC be liable to a user or to any third party for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special or exemplary damages or lost profit resulting from any use or misuse of information provided through HPRCC.
