Update on Drought Conditions in the High Plains - December 15, 2015

Author: Judson Buescher - High Plains Regional Climate Center

Published: 2015-12-17 16:40:05
Updated:

Most of Kansas into eastern Nebraska experienced abnormally heavy precipitation over the past week, especially for the middle of December. Some places received more precipitation in just a couple days than their respective annual averages. Prior to this week, dryness only affected a few portions of this broad area…but where it did, conditions were significantly relieved. The broad abnormally dry area across central and eastern Kansas was reduced to two relatively small areas in the central and east-central parts of the state (where moderate drought existed last week).

As for areas in the Rockies, generally light to moderate precipitation fell on the region, leaving dryness and drought almost entirely unchanged. The only adjustment was made in north-central Colorado, where 1 to locally 4 inches of precipitation brought an end to abnormal dryness for the time being.
