Update on Drought Conditions in the High Plains - November 3, 2015

Author: Judson Buescher - High Plains Regional Climate Center

Published: 2015-11-06 16:19:37
Updated:

The northern and central Plains received below normal precipitation for the previous week. However, parts of North Dakota received rains that helped improve winter wheat condition. Even though little or no rain fell on South Dakota, 90-day surpluses, lower temperatures, and minimal evapotranspiration have kept the D0 from worsening. In southern Nebraska and eastern Kansas, light to moderate (0.3-0.9 inches) rains generally kept conditions stable. However, due to short term dryness there was a degradation from D0 to D1. In southeastern Colorado and southwestern Kansas, 0.6-1.5 inches of rain, locally to 2.5 inches, plus heavy rains from last week, were enough to eliminate the D0. In Wyoming extreme short-term dryness from the past three months expanded the D0 drought quite dramatically in this state.
