Recent conditions warranted little change to the U.S. Drought Monitor depiction of the High Plains this week. However, beneficial rainfall brought improvements to drought conditions in Colorado. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, reductions were made to extreme drought (D3) conditions in the northwest part of the state after receiving snowfall. Long-term drought impacts still linger in eastern Kansas, central South Dakota, and north-central North Dakota.

The Climate Prediction Center’s 6-10 day outlook has increased chances of below-normal temperatures throughout the High Plains, with the greatest probability for below-normal temperatures across Nebraska, South Dakota, central and eastern Kansas, central and eastern Wyoming, and southeast North Dakota. Increased chances for below-normal precipitation are present in western North Dakota, western South Dakota, and northern Wyoming. Increased chances for above-normal precipitation are present in Kansas, western Colorado, and southeast Nebraska. According to the 7-day Quantitative Precipitation Forecast, precipitation is likely throughout the High Plains except for North Dakota, with the greatest amounts of precipitation expected in northeast Nebraska.
