Updated:
Overall, it was a warm and dry week for the High Plains region. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, drought conditions remained nearly unchanged since last week. The only small change that did occur was in southern Kansas where abnormally dry (D0) conditions were removed. Throughout the High Plains, recent precipitation has improved soil moisture and pasture conditions. However, longer-term drought impacts are still present in Colorado and the Dakotas. These areas have received around 50% of their normal precipitation in the past year.
The Climate Prediction Center’s 6-10 day outlook favors below-normal temperatures across Colorado, Wyoming, western and central Kansas, the panhandle of Nebraska, and southwestern South Dakota. Above-normal precipitation is favored for the entire High Plains region. According to the 7-day Quantitative Precipitation Forecast, light precipitation is possible throughout much of the High Plains, with the greatest amounts expected in southeast Kansas and portions of the Rockies.
