Update on Drought Conditions in the High Plains - October 6, 2015
Author: Judson Buescher - High Plains Regional Climate Center
Published: 2015-10-09 15:23:34
Updated:
Little or no rain fell in northeastern Kansas, northeastern South Dakota, and southeastern North Dakota, thus short-term dryness (D0) expanded based upon 60- and 90-day shortages. In these areas, 90-day percentages were between 25-75%, and accumulated deficits were 2-6 inches. Southwestern South Dakota and western Wyoming saw the removal of D0 conditions due to generous precipitation amounts.
In North Dakota temperatures averaged two to six degrees above normal while minimal precipitation was reported across the state. Some western parts, however, received up to one inch of precipitation. There were about 6 days suitable for harvesting due to the weather. Most of South Dakota crops experienced advancing maturity due to the continued warm and dry weather. Soybean harvest progressed along with winter wheat seeding and calf weaning.
Much of Nebraska experienced near normal temperatures this week with occasional precipitation in the eastern half of the state. Harvesting is continuing with some delays due to wet fields. A majority of Kansas saw warm, mostly dry conditions. Corn harvested was at 62%, ahead of the 57% five-year average.
Dry weather conditions prevailed in Colorado. These dry conditions accelerated fieldwork and allowed harvesting of several row crops to begin. In Wyoming warmer and wetter conditions dominated around the state.
