Update on Drought Conditions in the High Plains Region - March 10, 2015

No drastic changes in drought conditions for the High Plains region over the last week. Once again our region was very warm and fairly dry. All of the high plains was about six to 15 degrees Fahrenheit above average. Most of the region received little to no precipitation, with eastern and southeastern Kansas receiving the most at .02 to .30 inches of rain. This is below average for this region, where usually approximately an inch of rain falls.

Since the ground is still frozen in the northern High Plains, many of the impacts due to the lack in precipitation were not felt. This area also had snow depths of two to nine inches, so the melt also helped mitigate the impacts of the precipitation deficit. Colorado could benefit from a couple more snow storms this year; however, their lack of precipitation is not as serious as it was a few weeks ago. Southeastern Kansas had a lack of precipitation, above normal temperatures, and the ground is no longer frozen. This is why that area saw a degradation in drought conditions.

Over the next week, the northern Plains might see some precipitation falling mostly as rain. Although, there likely will not be enough to improve the current dryness in North Dakota and South Dakota.
