Year 2008 Temperature Climatology and Departures from Normal for the High Plains Region and the U.S.

| High Plains: Much of the High Plains region averaged below normal temperatures for 2008. It was above normal only along the western margin of the High Plains and toward the Southwest U.S. The summer temperatures were relatively mild throughout the High Plains with no prolonged heat waves in 2008. As noted on the Cooling Degree Days Departure Map, below, the demand for air conditioning was below normal through much of the High Plains and the center of the U.S. |
| Conterminous U.S. The most notable feature of the Year 2008 temperature climatology is the large area in the center of the conterminous U.S. that averaged below normal temperatures. The Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and part of Oklahoma were part of this region of below normal temperatures. There were some other areas with below normal temperatures in 2008, for example the Pacific Northwest, but none of them were as large as the region in the center of the U.S. that experienced a cooler than normal year. |
