HPRCC director Martha Shulski and staff member Crystal Stiles attended meetings in Rapid City, SD last week regarding the resiliency of tribes to drought and extreme events. The meetings were put on by the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) and the InterTribal Buffalo Council. Sixteen Native American tribes, fourteen of which reside within the Missouri River Basin, were represented at the meetings. Scientists and policymakers from several organizations were also present. Topics discussed include buffalo herd management, drought and climate monitoring, water resources management, and the restoration of native ecology on reservations.

A more detailed report that summarizes the meetings is forthcoming. As for next steps, the HPRCC intends to collaborate with organizations that were present at the meetings to have a workshop focused on drought and climate monitoring needs of Native American reservations.
