Weekly High Plains Drought Update - October 14, 2016

This week saw improvements in conditions in Wyoming and Nebraska, while the rest of the region saw no changes. North Dakota remains almost completely free of drought and abnormally dry conditions, except for the southern border of the state. Areas of severe (D2) and moderate (D1) drought as well as abnormal dryness (D0) decreased across western Wyoming this week. Kansas continues to have abnormal dryness in the southwestern portion of the state. D0, D1, and D2 drought conditions linger in western South Dakota and southern Nebraska this week. Conditions in Colorado remained consistent as well, with zones of D0 and D1 conditions continuing to persist.
Over 74% of the High Plains region is currently free of drought or abnormal dryness.
Over the next week, above normal temperatures are expected across the entire continental US. Meanwhile, below normal precipitation is expected for the central and southern portions of the High Plains Region as well as the Southwest and West Coast. The northern areas of the High Plains Region are expecting to experience near normal precipitation values this week.
