Colorado
On Friday, November 14, 2008 come to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to hang out with some of the world's cutting-edge polar scientists and explorers at POLAR-PALOOZA! This multimedia road show will present Earth's iciest, remotest regions. See a 130,000-year-old piece of ice, try on extreme cold weather gear, and learn an Alaskan Native dance. Also enjoy cool jazz and a cash bar with frozen drinks and snacks. Admission to the Museum will be free from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. as part of Denver Arts Week.
Kansas
Forces of Nature will be at the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka through January 4, 2009. Come learn about Wind, Earth, Water, and Fire! Please contact the Kansas Museum of History for more information.
Nebraska
This event is free and open to the public on Thursday, November 6, 2008 from 1:30-5:00pm at the UNL City Union (1400 R St., Lincoln, NE). This forum will explore the goals and potential climate change legislation that will likely be considered by the new Congress in 2009, and examine the opportunities and challenges such legislation will present to Nebraska. Keynote speakers include David Hawkins (Director of the Climate Center, Natural Resources Defense Council) and John McClure (Vice-President of Government and Public Affairs, Nebraska Public Power District), followed by a panel discussion featuring industry, energy, and policy experts.
Hurricane and Tornado Intercepts by the Doppler on Wheels
Dr. Josh Wurman, director of the Center for Severe Weather Research, will give a talk Thursday Nov 13th at 5:00 PM in the Wick Alumni Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His talk will highlight the intercepts of hurricanes and tornadoes by the Doppler on Wheels (DOW), a mobile Doppler radar that has been used to retrieve unparalleled data near some of nature's most severe atmospheric phenomena. Dr. Wurman and the DOW are also featured on the reality series "Storm Chasers" currently airing on the Discovery Channel. The talk is free and open to the public. Dr. Wurman's visit is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the UNL Department of Geosciences.
On December 9th, 2008 come see "The Drought of the 1890s on the Western High Plains" by geographer David Wishart. There will also be comments on present drought risks by Mike Hayes of the National Drought Mitigation Center. The talk begins at 7pm in the first-floor auditorium of Hardin Hall, located at 33rd and Holdrege in Lincoln. Click here for more information on this seminar series.
