Slight improvements were made to areas of the High Plains Region this week, while others saw a slight degradation in conditions. In South Dakota, areas of moderate (D1), severe (D2), and extreme (D3) drought conditions across the state decreased. Conditions in North Dakota remained the same with only small areas on abnormal dryness and drought present on the western half of the state. D0, D1, and D2 conditions in Nebraska remained, while the northeastern border of the state saw the removal of D0 conditions. A small area of D0 conditions in northern Kansas continues to persist, while the remainder of the state is drought free. The persistence of D0 and D1 conditions throughout Colorado continues this week. D2 conditions in northwestern Wyoming expanded this week and areas of D3 conditions were removed from the northeast. The areas of D0, D1, and D2 conditons across Wyoming continue to persist this week as well.
Over 70% of the High Plains region is currently free of drought or abnormal dryness.
Over the next week, below-normal temperatures are expected for the southern portion of the High Plains Region as well as most of the southwestern US. The northern portion of the region is expecting near normal temperatures along with areas in the Midwest. Meanwhile, above normal precipitation is expected for the southern High Plains as well as the southern Plains and Midwest. However, below normal precipitation is expected for the northern portions of the region as well as the Pacific Northwest.
