The High Plains Region has been unseasonably warm this March, with average temperature departures up to 15 F above normal. In addition, over 1,500 daily records have been set over the past two weeks in the High Plains Region alone! The warm weather we have been experiencing has caused the flowers and trees to come out quite early. All the warm weather has many people in the southern areas of the Region thinking, "Will we have another freeze?"
The High Plains Regional Climate Center has compiled a table that shows the earliest, average, and latest date of the last spring freeze for many locations across the Region. If the average last spring freeze date is any indicator, the answer to, "Will we have another freeze?" is, "YES!" Fortunately, a brief amount of time at or below freezing will not necessarily be detrimental to the tender vegetation that has come out.
Many people may remember the Easter Freeze of April 2007. That spring started off very warm but, a prolonged cold snap in April caused freeze damage to numerous crops, including wheat, alfalfa, and fruit trees. Disaster declarations extended from Colorado to the southeast US and the total loss due to the freeze was estimated at over 2 billion dollars.
