Updated:
Locally isolated precipitation brought some improvements to areas of the High Plains Region this week. Other areas saw slight degradation due to the lack of significant precipitation. In South Dakota, areas of moderate (D1), severe (D2), and extreme (D3) drought conditions across the state decreased. North Dakota experienced slight changes this week with the removal of the D0 and D1 conditions in the northwest and southeast corners. D0, D1, and D2 conditions in Nebraska remained, while the southeastern border of the state saw a slight decrease in D0 conditions. D0 conditions across northern Kansas continue to persist along with the introduction of D1 condtions this week. Northern Colorado saw the expansion of D0 conditions as well as the persistence of D0 and D1 conditions throughout the state. Conditions across southern Wyoming saw expansions of D0 areas, while the D0, D1, D2, and D3 zones in the north continue to remain with only mild improvements.
Over 64% of the High Plains region is currently free of drought or abnormal dryness.
Over the next week, above-normal temperatures are expected for the High Plains Region as well as most of the US, excluding the West Coast. Meanwhile, above normal precipitation is expected for the northern portion of the region as well as the northern US and East Coast. However, below normal precipitation is expected for the central and southern portions of the region as well as the central US.
