Another week of intense heat and a lack of precipitation led to areas of abnormal dryness and drought to continue to exand in the High Plains region.  Northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota saw further expansion of moderate (D1) and severe (D2) drought conditions.  In addition, extreme drought (D3) conditions were introduced into this area as well.  D1 conditions expanded along the border of southeastern North Dakota and northeastern South Dakota along with the introduction of D2 conditions in this area.  Abnormally dry conditions expanded into areas of Nebraska and eastern Kansas from the continuing heat this week with a small area in central Nebraska expanding into D1 conditions.  The D0 and D1 conditions in the Big Horn Range of northern Wyoming as well as the D0 conditions in Colorado still persist.

Over 27% of the High Plains region is currently experiencing some form of drought or abnormal dryness.

Over the next week, above normal temperatures are expected for the High Plains Region, in addition to much of the US, excluding the Pacific Northwest region.  Meanwhile, below normal precipitation is expected for the western and southern portions of the US including the far western portion of the High Plains, while above normal precipitiaion is expected for much of the Midwest region as well as the eastern region of the High Plains.
