Due to a lack of precipitation and hot temperatures this week, areas of abnormal dryness and drought expanded further into the High Plains region.  Northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota saw a further expansion of moderate (D1) and severe (D2) drought conditions.  D1 conditions expanded along the border of southeastern North Dakota and northeastern South Dakota as well as the far northwestern corner of Nebraska.  Abnormally dry conditions expanded into areas in Nebraska, Colorado, and southeastern Kansas from the excessive heat this week.  The D0 and D1 conditions in the Big Horn Range of northern Wyoming still persist.

Over 81% of the High Plains region continues to experience no form of drought or abnormal dryness.

Over the next week, above normal temperatures are expected for the northern and western portions of the High Plains Region, in addition to much of the western and southern US.  However, below normal temperatures for the eastern portion of the region as well as the much of the Midwest region.  Meanwhile, below normal precipitation is expected for the northern portion of the US including the northern portion of the High Plains, while above normal precipitiaion is expected for much of the southern portion of the region as well as much of the southern and eastern areas of the US.
