Updated:
Due to a lack of precipitation for much of the region, areas of abnormal dryness (D0) expanded into southwestern North Dakota, western South Dakota, northwestern Wyoming, and the far northwest corner of Nebraska this week. Northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota saw an expansion of moderate drought (D1) conditions. The D0 and D1 conditions in the Big Horn Range in northern Wyoming still persist as well as the severe drought conditions (D2) in northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota.
Kansas continues to remain free of drought and abnormally dry conditions, with over 83% of the High Plains region experiencing no form of drought or abnormal dryness.
Over the next week, above normal precipitation is expected for the southern portion of the High Plains Region, in addition to, much of the Great Lakes, East Coast, and northeastern regions of the US. Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to be above normal for the western portion of the region as well as most of the western US.
