Author: Haylie Mikulak - High Plains Regional Climate Center

Updated:
Due to a lack of precipitation in the northern Plains, areas of abnormal dryness (D0) expanded into western North Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and western South Dakota this week. The border of South Dakota, Minnesota, and North Dakota had moderate drought conditions (D1) introduced, while eastern Wyoming and western South Dakota had both moderate and severe drought (D2) conditions introduced. The D0 and D1 conditions in the Big Horn Range in northern Wyoming still persist.
Nebraska and Kansas continue to remain free of drought and abnormally dry conditions, with over 85% of the region experiencing no form of drought or abnormal dryness.
Over the next week, below normal precipitation is expected for the High Plains Region as well as much of central and northeastern US. Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to be above normal for the region in addition to most of the eastern US.
