Updated:
Heavy precipitation across the Plains this week brought significant relief to many of the areas of drought and dryness according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The areas of abnormal dryness and moderate drought (D1) decreased across North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado. The rainfall brought a drop from over 50% of the region in either abnormally dry or drought conditions to just under 40%. Although the heavy precipitiaton brought relief to the region, drought and abnormal dryness continues to stretch across North Dakota and Kansas. Unlike much of the High Plains region, Wyoming did not experience much if any relief this past week, which resulted 40% of the region to remain in abnormally dry or drought conditons.
Over the next week, above normal precipitaton is expected across the region as well as most of the US. Meanwhile, temperatures in the region are expected to be above normal for the Southern Plains compared to below normal in the Northern Plains.
