On Saturday, February 6th, the University of Nebraska State Museum held its annual family fun day, Dinosaurs and Disasters, and the High Plains Regional Climate Center (HPRCC) was there to help.  Staff from HPRCC brought a portable weather station and a climate trivia game for the attendees.  The portable weather station is a shorter version of a real-life Automated Weather Data Network (AWDN) station, however all instruments on the portable station are identical to those used in the network.  Measurements from the instruments were displayed on a computer and attendees got a chance to “play” with the instrumentation to see how they could change the measurements.  Pictured to the right is HPRCC intern BJ Baule who is demonstrating how an AWDN station works.  Other stations at the event included rock and fossil identification, microbial life and geobiology, tsunami, tornadoes, and meteorites.  Dinosaurs and Disasters is sponsored by the University of Nebraska State Museum and the UNL Department of Geosciences.
