This winter has been cold and snowy which has caused many travel worries, school closings, and road closures. This leads many people to ask questions such as, just how snowy has it been and which locations may make the top 10 for seasonal snowfall?
The High Plains Regional Climate Center has compiled season-to-date snowfall amounts and has determined the chances of making the top 10 snowiest seasons on record for selected locations throughout the Region (see tables below). So far, North Platte, NE has been one of the snowiest locations with 44.1 inches (112.01 cm) of snow. This snowfall already makes the 2009-2010 season the 7th snowiest on record for North Platte (1874-2010). Other locations across the Region are only inches away from breaking into the top 10 and have high chances of doing so. For instance, Norfolk, NE with 44.3 inches (112.52 cm) of snow to date has an 88% chance of making it into the top 10. Elsewhere across the Region, Omaha, NE has a 79% chance, Concordia, KS has a 57% chance, Sioux Falls, SD has a 38% chance, and Fargo, ND has a 22% chance of having one of the top 10 snowiest winters on record.
The latest storm to hit the Region brought ice, rain, snow, and blizzard conditions to eastern portions of the Region and another storm in currently underway. The High Plains Regional Climate Center will continue to keep the statistics updated throughout the season.
