Grand Island Flooding – June 25-26, 2025

Training thunderstorms over central Nebraska on the afternoon of the 25th and into the early hours of the 26th led to tremendous flooding in the Grand Island area. On the 25th alone, 6.41 inches of rain fell at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island. This would rank as the highest single-day precipitation total for June and fell just 0.09 inches short of the record for any month, which was set on May 11th, 2005. Combined with what fell in the early hours of the 26th, the two-day total was 7.52 inches. It would break the record for the wettest two-day stretch at the nearly 130-year-old station. This historic total is roughly 30 percent of their annual precipitation. For June, Grand Island recorded 11.36 inches of rain, which ranks as the second wettest June and third wettest month overall.

Despite large portions of the city being flooded, there were no injuries or fatalities reported. Between midnight and 11 am, the Grand Island Police Department responded to 23 calls for motorist assists and 11 citizen assists. The mayor would issue a state of emergency as the flooding resulted in vehicles being stranded, severe damage to public and private property, disruption of utility services, and endangerment of the health and safety of the citizens within the disaster area. The city shared resources and safety guidelines for residents, such as clean-up kits provided by the American Red Cross, instructions for debris and garbage removal, basement flooding precautions, and resources for testing water quality of private water wells.
