July-August 2024 Heat Summary

Overview (Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota) 

The high plains region experienced heat waves in July and early August, resulting in many stations throughout the states breaking records for single day temperatures and days of consecutive heat. While the western portion of the region experienced more frequent and longer lasting heat, the eastern portion also broke records in a few states. In South Dakota, Maurine had the second most consecutive days above 90 degrees (14 days), and Interior had the second most consecutive days above 100 degrees (8 days). Mound City, Kansas had the third most consecutive days above 90 degrees (8 days). In Nebraska, Scotts Bluff had the second most consecutive days above 90 degrees (15 days), Chadron had the second most consecutive days above 90 degrees (15 days). Agate, Nebraska had the most consecutive days above 95 degrees (10 days), tying with the previous record in 1960. Scotts Bluff, Nebraska 

Colorado 

The consistent heat in Colorado broke records for single day temperatures and consecutive days. Grand Junction Walker Field had the second most consecutive days above 90 degrees (40 days). Towaoc had the third most consecutive days above 90 degrees (37 days). Iliff had the most consecutive days above 95 degrees (13 days), tying the 2012 record. Briggsdale had the second most consecutive days above 95 degrees (13 days). 

Montana 

The heat in Montana was consistent throughout July and early August as many stations’ broke records for highs, averages, and lows for single days. Not only were single day records broken, but many stations broke previous records of consecutive days above 90 degrees as well. Powderville had the most consecutive days above 90 degrees (22 days), breaking the previous record in 1970 by 2 days. Broadus had the most consecutive days above 90 degrees (30 days), tying with the 2021 record. The Eureka ranger station had the most consecutive days above 95 degrees (18 days), breaking the previous record in 1971 by 3 days. Libby had the most consecutive days above 95 degrees (17 days), breaking the previous record in 2021 by 6 days. 

Wyoming 

The heat in late July and early August resulted in single day records being broken, and consecutive day records being broken. Torrington Municipal Airport had the most consecutive days above 90 degrees (16 days), breaking the 2002 record by a day. Lingle had the most consecutive days above 90 degrees (16 days), breaking the 2012 record by 2 days.
