August 19-25, 2024 Summary

Temperature 

This week featured above normal temperatures for a majority of the region. The warmest regions were northeastern Wyoming, eastern and northern North Dakota, western South Dakota, and northwestern Nebraska with temperatures 6°F to 8°F above normal with some areas reaching 8°F to 11°F above normal. The coldest regions were eastern Kansas, eastern Nebraska, and a spot in eastern North Dakota reaching temperatures 2°F to 4°F below normal. 

Maximum temperatures were above normal for most of the region. The warmest regions were northeastern Wyoming, the southeastern corner of Colorado, and the Wyoming-South Dakota-Nebraska border reaching temperatures 9°F to 12°F above normal with a spot in northcentral Wyoming reaching 12°F to 15°F above normal. The warmest temperature was 97°F at the Lamar Municipal Airport, Colorado which is 8°F above normal for the area, and the La Junta Municipal Airport, Colorado which is 6°F above normal for the area Temperatures in western Colorado, eastern Nebraska, eastern Kansas, and a spot in eastern North Dakota reached temperatures 3°F to 6°F below normal. 

Minimum temperatures were above normal for a majority of the region. The warmest regions were northern and western North Dakota, western and central South Dakota, eastern Wyoming, and northwestern Nebraska with temperatures 8°F to 10°F above normal with some areas reaching 11°F above normal. Temperatures in eastern Kansas reached 2°F to 4°F below normal. The coldest temperature was 50°F in Alamosa, Colorado which is 5°F above normal for the area. 

Precipitation 

Precipitation amounts varied this week, ranging from 2% in southern Kansas, northern Nebraska, central Wyoming, central and eastern North Dakota, and the Wyoming-South Dakota-Nebraska border to 800% in eastern Colorado and a spot in the middle of Nebraska’s panhandle. Pierre, South Dakota received 7.97 inches of precipitation, well above their normal of 0.07 inches; most of this fell on the 22nd. Drought continues in the region. D0 (abnormally dry) conditions were the same as last week at 63%. In the region, Colorado experienced the highest decrease in D0 conditions by 10% while Nebraska experienced the highest increase in D0 conditions by 11%. 

Severe Storms 

Colorado received 1 to 2 inches hail in diameter. Storms in Kansas caused damage in Wichita and canceled the second day of the Frontiers of Flight show.
