July 22-28, 2024 Summary

Temperature 

This week featured varied temperatures for the region. The warmest regions were western North Dakota, western South Dakota, and the northwestern and southeastern corners of Wyoming reaching 6°F to 8°F above normal. The coldest regions were central South Dakota, southeastern Colorado and southcentral and southwestern Kansas reaching temperatures 4°F to 6°F below normal with some spots in Kansas and Colorado reaching 6°F to 8°F below normal. 

Maximum temperatures were above normal for a majority of the region. Western North Dakota, western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and northwestern Nebraska reached temperatures 6°F to 8°F above normal with some spots reaching 8°F to 11°F above normal. The warmest temperature was 98°F in Grand Junction, Colorado which is 3°F above normal for the area and Rapid City, South Dakota which is 10°F above normal for the area. Temperatures in southern Kansas and spots in central and southeastern Colorado reached 4°F to 6°F with some spots in Kansas reaching 6°F to 10°F below normal. 

Minimum temperatures were 4°F to 6°F above normal for a majority of North Dakota, northern North Dakota and northern Wyoming with some areas reaching 6°F to 10°F above normal. Central South Dakota, southern Kansas, eastern Colorado, and the Nebraskan panhandle reached temperatures of 4°F to 6°F below normal with some areas reaching 6°F to 11°F below normal. The coldest temperature was 45°F in Alamosa, Colorado which is 3°F below normal for the area. 

Precipitation 

Precipitation amounts varied this week, ranging from 2% in western North Dakota, most of South Dakota, eastern Nebraska and the panhandle, eastern Kansas, the Colorado-Kansas border, and central and northern Wyoming to 400% in western Wyoming. Hayes Center, Nebraska received 3.06 inches of precipitation, well above their normal of 0.11 inches; most of this fell on the 22nd. Drought continues in the region. D0 (abnormally dry) conditions were the same as last week of 42%. In the region, Colorado experienced the highest decrease in D0 conditions by 5% while Kansas experienced the highest increase in D0 conditions by 6%. 

Severe Storms 

Nebraska and Wyoming received hail 1 inch in diameter. Kansas and South Dakota received hail 1 to 1.25 inches in diameter and 1 to 1.75 inches in diameter respectively. Colorado and North Dakota received hail 1 to 2 inches in diameter.
