July 15-21, 2024 Summary

Temperature 

This week featured varied temperatures for the region. The coldest regions were eastern North Dakota and central South Dakota with temperatures 4°F to 8°F below normal. The warmest region was the northwestern corner of Wyoming with temperatures 4°F to 8°F above normal. 

Maximum temperatures were below normal for a majority of the eastern portion of the region and above normal for the western portion. Eastern and southern North Dakota, central and eastern South Dakota, central and eastern Nebraska, and eastern and southern Kansas reached temperatures 2°F to 4°F below normal with some areas reaching 4°F to 8°F below normal. Wyoming, western and northern Colorado, western North Dakota, and western South Dakota reached temperatures 2°F to 6°F above normal with the northwestern corner of Wyoming reaching 6°F to 11°F above normal. The warmest temperature was Grand Junction, Colorado reaching 98°F which is 4°F above normal for the area. 

Minimum temperatures were 2°F to 4°F below normal in eastern North Dakota, eastern and central South Dakota, central and eastern Nebraska, northeastern Kansas, and eastern Colorado with some areas reaching 4°F to 8°F below normal. The coldest temperature was Alamosa, Colorado reaching 49°F which is 1°F above normal for the area. Temperatures in western Wyoming, western Colorado, western North Dakota, and western South Dakota reached 4°F to 6°F above normal with some areas in Wyoming and Colorado reaching 6°F to 8°F above normal. 

Precipitation 

Precipitation amounts varied this week, ranging from 2% in eastern and central Kansas, the panhandle of Nebraska, western Colorado, southcentral Wyoming, western South Dakota, and western North Dakota to 400% in eastern Colorado, western and southern Kansas, and northcentral and eastern Wyoming. Winfield, Kansas received 3.37 inches of precipitation, well above the normal 0.13 inches for the area. Drought continues in the region. D0 (abnormally dry) across the region was up from 39% to 42%. In the region, South Dakota experienced the highest decrease in D0 conditions by 1% while Colorado experienced the highest increase in D0 conditions with 12%. 

Severe Storms 

Wyoming received hail 1 to 1.25 inches in diameter. Colorado, Kansas, and South Dakota received hail 1 to 1.75 inches in diameter. Nebraska received hail 1 to 3 inches in diameter. North Dakota received hail 1 to 3.5 inches in diameter.
